SLAIHEE CONFERENCES

2nd Conference 2006

The Second SDC & SLAIHEE Joint Conference was held on 18th May 2006. The conference was organised jointly with the Staff Development Centre of the University of Colombo, and the theme was “From Teaching to a learning Culture – Providing structures for the paradigm shift”.

Proceedings were conducted by Professor Suki Ekaratne. The Keynote Address was delivered by Mr Stephen Cox. Sessions were chaired by Mr. Stephen Cox and Mr. Chandana Dissanayake. Concurrent / parallel sessions were not held as members expressed a preference not to have such concurrent sessions. Based on this membership preference (from the feedback of the past conference), the number of oral presentations that could be presented were limited.

Out of 8 oral presentations that were accepted for presentation at the sessions following the peer-review process, seven (7) were presented, as follows:

  1. Facilitating deep learning by improving study skills of undergraduates by P. Dias, University of Sri Jayawardenepura.
  2. A trial study in the use of an Outdoor Training Programme for enhancing student inclusivity by K.A.C. Chandrika and G.D.N. Perera, Universityof Sri Jayawardenepura.
  3. Changing traditional teaching-assessment to group work to bring about development of undergraduate higher-learning skills by P.A.D.E. Kodituwakku, Sabaragamuwa University.
  4. A trial study in Peer Assessment: Evolving Structures for brining about Improved Learning by P.D.C. Udayashantha and K.A.N. Dilhani, University of Sri Jayawardenepura.
  5. Use of Learning Outcomes to improve students? learning and examination performance by Nagalingam Sivayogan, University of Jaffna.
  6. An initial study into students perceptions of choice criteria in the selection of non-Sri Lankan fee-levying degree awarding institutes available in Sri Lanka by K.D. Gunawardana, University of Sri Jayawardenepura.
  7. Identifying teaching-learning practices and perceptions for effecting a paradigm shift from teaching to a learning culture by Suki Ekaratne and Shrinika Weerakoon, University of Colombo.
